World Down Syndrome Day 2024
My daughter Amy has Down’s Syndrome and last week she reminded me that March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. She is determined that she will wear odd socks (see the link to the Lots of Socks campaign below). Amy is delighted that it falls on the same day as her own ‘Person Centred Planning’ day. She strongly believes that all involved will help her hopes and dreams become a reality. Of course there will be a lot to overcome to help Amy achieve all that she wants to but as her parent I am determined to do all I can to support this.
Introducing Amy
Tell us a little bit about yourself Amy – My name is Amy. I am 22, very nearly 23! My hobbies are swimming, reading, and singing. I don’t like loud noises as they make me feel anxious. I used to go to a residential college but I left there in July 2023. I am now very busy and spend time with my support workers. I have three different work placements. On a Monday I work as a receptionist. On Thursday I work in a local café where I love making Rocky Road to sell to the customers. On a Friday I work in a training café where I enjoy serving customers as well as baking. I go swimming twice a week and also have to do chores at home.
What is the worst thing about not being at college any more? Having to wake up early in the morning to go to work! I miss living with my friends. I miss seeing my boyfriend every day. We FaceTime and text each other to keep in touch. I don’t like having to do my own laundry. Having to do household chores such as cleaning is boring.
What is the best thing? Being independent with the right support. I love planning my day and having fun.
What are your goals Amy? To have a paid job in a café. I want to share a house with my friends. Hopefully this will be soon! I want to be able to travel on my own.
Finally Amy what are your dreams? One day I hope to get married. I also want to have my own café.
